I am Anishnawbe from the Robinson Huron Treaty territory with more than 30 years experience in the minerals sector and in project impact assessment. I am a member of the Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO). As a Geoscientist, I have held senior positions with several mining and environmental management companies and organizations. While the tasks were primarily technical, roles included consultation and engagement, negotiations, economic development planning, strategic policy and planning with Indigenous communities, governments and the private sector.
I have extensive experience in supporting minerals industry and Indigenous community relations through the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association, National Energy Board, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and several Indigenous Governments in Canada, Australia, USA and South Africa. I have presented at many Indigenous and resource development forums, including the United Nations, Geneva and New York, and World Bank in Washington DC, and Quito, Ecuador on community impacts and opportunities in the mineral industry.
I am the Chair of the Shkagamik-kwe Health Centre, Sudbury, and the Sweetgrass Health Centre, Cochrane. I am also on the Board of Directors for the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT). As a Board Member of the National Energy Board, Canada, 2010 to 2013, I was appointed by the Government of Canada to a Joint Review Panel (National Energy Board and Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency) to assess the project impacts and the public interest and necessity of the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project in western Canada. I am currently on the Environment and Climate Change Canada, Impact Assessment Panel Review Board. I recently completed a review of Indigenous Rights/interests and impacts of the Grassy Mountain Coal Project, Alberta. My current work seeks to promote Indigenous-led environmental and impact assessments in resource development.
In 2020, I was awarded the Skookum Jim Prospectors and Developers of Canada Award. In 2021 I was awarded the most Distinguished Graduate Award, Maths and Sciences, Brock University.
